Raila’s death, Duale and Moses Kuria moves keep netizens busy

This analysis looks at trending topics between  October 13 and October 16, 2025 on X, Tik Tok and Facebook.

Kuria’s eyes Nairobi

Moses Kuria, the former Trade and Public Service Cabinet Secretary and recent Senior Economic Advisor to President William Ruto, trended following his announcement to run for Nairobi governor in the 2027 general election via a post on his X account on October 13, 2025. The swift dissemination of his declaration on major platforms such as the Kenyans.co.ke Facebook page, which has 2 million followers, and NTV Kenya’s Facebook page, illustrates how digital media accelerates political messaging and agenda-setting. The engagement metrics, over 3,000 likes, 800 comments, and 600 shares on NTV Kenya’s post, highlight significant youth participation, with many comments critiquing Governor Sakaja’s tenure. This demonstrates that social media not only amplifies political announcements but also serves as a space for public debate, allowing citizens to express dissatisfaction with incumbents and gauge the resonance of new political contenders. The combination of Kuria’s messaging and the platforms’ amplification underscores the growing influence of digital media in shaping pre-election political narratives in Kenya.

Impact on media

Kuria’s announcement generated significant online traction across major Facebook pages and X, with thousands of interactions (likes, comments, shares) within hours. This demonstrates the media’s role in amplifying political announcements and shaping the digital news agenda, especially among youth audiences.

Duale SHA showdown

A heated confrontation between Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi dominated social and mainstream media on Tuesday. The clash occurred during a National Assembly Health Committee session probing alleged fraud within the Social Health Authority (SHA). Duale accused Kibagendi of owning health facilities that had been shut down for fraud, suggesting a conflict of interest, while Kibagendi countered by alleging that Duale and his allies were misappropriating SHA funds. The verbal exchange nearly escalated into a physical altercation. Viral video clips of the shouting match, including Kibagendi’s declaration, “You and your friends are stealing from SHA!” and Duale’s retort, “extortionist”, amassed millions of views, triggering polarised public reactions. Some praised Kibagendi’s assertiveness, while others criticized the perceived unprofessionalism, reflecting broader public frustration over SHA irregularities and healthcare access in Kenya. Mainstream media amplified the incident across digital platforms. NTV Kenya (@NTVKenya) posted a video titled “Drama in Parliament as CS Duale and MP Kibagendi engage in shouting match over SHA”, highlighting the verbal clash and its temporary disruption of proceedings. With a follower base exceeding 4 million, the clip garnered 524K views and 15K reactions. Similarly, Kenyans.co.ke (@Kenyans.co.ke) covered the confrontation under the headline “Drama Erupts in Parliament as MPs Confront CS Duale”, linking the incident to broader scrutiny of SHA and noting Kibagendi’s subsequent Facebook clarification denying ownership of fraudulent hospitals. The post, shared with over two million followers, attracted significant engagement.

Impact on media

The viral videos and media coverage intensified public scrutiny of the Social Health Authority (SHA), highlighting mismanagement and corruption concerns. This demonstrates how media platforms can drive political accountability by broadcasting parliamentary confrontations to a wide audience.

Raila Odinga’s Farewell

Former Prime Minister and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, affectionately called “the Enigma” for his decades-long resilience in championing multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms, and five presidential bids, passed away on October 15, 2025, in India, after suffering a fatal cardiac arrest during a morning walk while receiving treatment for chronic conditions including deep vein thrombosis, kidney disease, and diabetes. His sudden death triggered an unprecedented outpouring of grief across social media, with users sharing tributes, Luo mourning rituals, personal anecdotes, and videos highlighting his legacy as a peacemaker, including historic alliances such as the 2008 coalition with Mwai Kibaki and the 2024 pact with President William Ruto. Leaders across Kenya and abroad issued condolences, honoring Odinga’s contributions to national unity and democracy.

On October 15, X trends showed “Raila” at #1 with 174K tweets within an hour, “Ruto” at #3 with 380K tweets over 12 hours, and “Enigma” at #6 with 11K tweets within an hour, while President Ruto’s announcement of a seven-day national mourning period, state funeral, and flags at half-mast generated intense discussion. On 16 October, Raila’s body landed at JKIA from India, receiving a heroic yet chaotic reception as his followers and mourners flooded the airport to view him. Later that day, amid the public viewing at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, “Raila” trended #1 with 5.1M tweets over 14 hours, “Baba” at #2 with 184K tweets, and Kasarani” at #3 with 130K tweets over 4 hours, as massive crowds overwhelmed plans, leading police to fire tear gas and rubber bullets, resulting in at least three deaths and multiple injuries.

Facebook users shared condolence posts, videos of Odinga’s speeches, and cultural mourning practices, while TikTok videos highlighting his achievements, public mourning rituals, and influence on Kenyan democracy reached over 1.3M engagements, collectively illustrating how social media amplified national mourning, shaped political discourse, and memorialized Raila Odinga’s enduring impact on Kenya’s democratic fabric.

Impact on media

The widespread sharing of videos, tributes, and mourning rituals across X, Facebook, and TikTok highlights how media platforms can rapidly shape public memory, reinforce cultural practices, and frame narratives around national figures.
