ONLINE TRENDS

Online speculation over Railas’ health, Gideon Moi and struggle for facts

This report analyses trending themes between October 6 and 9 , 2025, on X, Facebook and TikTok.

LSK president resigns

Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, became a trending topic after announcing her resignation from the government-appointed Panel of Experts on Compensation for Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests via her X account. Her decision followed mounting criticism from civil society and youth activists, who questioned the panel’s legitimacy and independence. The panel, chaired by Prof Makau Mutua, had been mandated to assess compensation claims for individuals injured or killed during anti-government protests over tax hikes and governance grievances earlier in the year. However, its operations were halted in September following a High Court order suspending the panel’s activities pending a legal challenge to its constitutionality. In her statement, Odhiambo cited the stalled progress and her obligation to uphold constitutional principles as reasons for her resignation, a move that reignited public debate on government accountability and the credibility of state-appointed reform initiatives.

Impact on Media

Odhiambo’s resignation prompted extensive media coverage questioning the transparency and legality of government-appointed panels. News outlets and online platforms amplified debates around state accountability and the independence of public institutions, positioning the story as a test case for the government’s commitment to justice and reform.

Speculation over Moi-Ruto pact

Reports emerged of a secret meeting between KANU chairman Gideon Moi and President William Ruto, during which Ruto reportedly urged Moi to withdraw from the Baringo senatorial by-election in favor of UDA’s Vincent Chemitei, linking the request to strategic positioning for the 2027 elections. Early leaks suggested Moi’s reluctance, fueling speculation on X about a possible “truce” or Ruto’s attempt to co-opt a key political rival. Unverified reports circulated that KANU might not field a candidate, prompting protests from concerned supporters at Baringo Airstrip and KANU headquarters. The claims intensified online discussions about political deal-making, presidential influence, and the potential impact on Moi’s political legacy.

Impact on media

The unconfirmed reports surrounding Moi’s alleged withdrawal pushed media outlets to rely heavily on anonymous sources and social media chatter, underscoring challenges in verifying political claims amid fast-evolving narratives.

Raila Odinga’s health

Raila Odinga, ODM party leader, became a trending topic amid widespread speculation about his health after social media posts circulated old images claiming he had been hospitalized, generating over 765K engagements and a reach of 30K. His spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, dismissed the claims as politically motivated, implicating figures including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Eugene Wamalwa. Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, reassured the public on October 7 that he was well, emphasizing that any serious treatment could have been administered locally in Migori County, a statement that sparked further debate with over 270K engagements. Opposition leaders responded strongly: Kalonzo, via Wiper Party Secretary General Shakilla Abdala, condemned ODM for dragging his name into internal party confusion, while Gachagua humorously rejected the accusations, prayed for Raila’s good health, and framed his remarks within the 2027 political context, a response that drew over 300K views and public approval. The episode highlights how health-related narratives around high-profile political figures can rapidly gain traction online, intersecting with political discourse, public concern, and partisan commentary in Kenya.

Impact on media

Raila Odinga’s health became a major trending topic on social media, fueled by circulated old images and rumors of hospitalization. What was unique about this topic was the blending of personal health narratives with political speculation, prompting responses from his spokesperson, his wife Ida Odinga, and opposition leaders. The impact on media was significant: newsrooms and online platforms amplified the discussion, balancing public interest with fact-checking obligations, while social media analytics reflected massive engagement, showing how personal stories of political figures can dominate digital discourse.

Nyota programme

The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (Nyota) project, a five-year initiative launched by the Government of Kenya earlier this month, is funded by the World Bank with an initial allocation of Sh5 billion, part of a broader Sh28 billion commitment to support small businesses. Building on the previous Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities Project (KYEOP), Nyota targets approximately 820,000 vulnerable youth aged 18–29, extending to 35 for persons with disabilities, and includes some refugees. The program prioritizes youth with Form 4 education or below. Media coverage of Nyota was prominent across mainstream platforms, particularly on Facebook. Citizen TV Kenya (8M+ followers) focused on practical guidance, sharing videos, articles, and infographics to inform youth on how to access the program. In contrast, KTN News Kenya (1.6M followers) highlighted potential risks, including corruption and implementation challenges, through investigative videos, reflecting a more critical perspective on program delivery.

Impact on media

By highlighting potential corruption risks and implementation challenges, KTN News shaped public discourse around the programme, reflecting the media’s watchdog role. This critical coverage may influence public perception of Nyota, encouraging transparency and accountability in government programs while diversifying the narrative beyond promotional content.
