Ruto and Uhuru spoke on phone, Nation imagined they ‘met’

President William Ruto and his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, yesterday met to discuss an ugly development that should never have arisen in the first place (Nation editorial, June 12, p.13). Met? President Ruto and Mr Kenyatta spoke on the phone at length yesterday morning… (Nation, June 12, p.4). Does “met” and “spoke on the phone” mean the same?

The battle for political dominance has been heightened in the Mt Kenya region, where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is fighting for the unity of the people so as to have a footing in the region’s politics (Nation, June 12, p.5). Does this mean Riggy G has no “footing” in Mt Kenya politics, yet he is the most senior government official from there?

There is absolutely no basis to deny the holder of the top office in the land rights and privileges spelt out by the supreme law (Nation editorial, June 12, p.13). Of course “the holder of the top office in the land” is President William Ruto, but here the Nation was commenting on former President Uhuru Kenyatta reportedly denied his benefits. Uhuru is no longer “the holder of the top office in the land”.

Today in History: June 14, 1962: General China, whose real name is Waruhiu Itote, the last of the big time Mau Mau freedom fighters and second only in notoriety to the late Dedan Kimathi, becomes a free man (Nation, June 14, p.18).You can’t describe the struggles and sacrifices of Kenya’s heroic freedom fighters as “notoriety”, come on.

President William Ruto’s administration yesterday unveiled its ambitious Sh3.99 trillion for the 2024/25 budget up from Sh3.75 trillion, which was later adjusted to Sh3.75 trillion (People Daily, June 14, p.2). What adjustment is being reported here? The last two figures are the same.

Kenya pandemic not prepared to proffer oxygen (People Daily, June 12, p.2). What’s the meaning of this headline? Intro: Kenya is still ill-prepared to respond to an emergency if a pandemic broke out requiring medical oxygen, a new study shows. That’s not what the header says.

Other legislatures in attendance were Fatuma Mohamed and Abdifatah Abdillahi from Djibouti, Miherefu Shanko and Abeba Deadew from Ethiopia, and Abass Ali and Sayid Ali from Somalia (KBC Digital, June 13). Members of Parliament or county assemblies are also called lawmakers or legislators, not “legislatures”. Legislature is the law-making house/assembly.

Kenya owes China Sh920.52 billion in loans, making it the leading lender by country rankings even as President Willima Ruto looks west for more financing and trade cooperation (Star, June 14, p.12). Ruto looks East to seal holes in second budget (Standard, June 14, p.2). So, where is the President looking at the moment, east or west? You decide.
