Media must unite against bullying in struggle for transparency, accountability

The Nation Media Group conducted an investigative piece exposing the potential loss of billions of shillings through unlawful tax exemptions of imports involving companies linked to government-allied politicians. In response to this exposé, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria went into an abusive tirade against NMG. He even threatened to fire officials in any government agency that would advertise with the media house.

Not only should a single Cabinet Secretary not be able to do this, but the reason behind such firing would be quite outrageous and unlawful. It is alarming that a senior government official is threatening to withhold taxpayer-funded advertisements in an attempt to control the media’s editorial content.

First, it is essential to acknowledge and commend NMG for their commitment to bringing important issues to the public’s attention, such as this particular exposé. Second, Kuria’s aggressive outburst was unwarranted and perplexing, as there are proper channels to address any concerns he may have. His extreme reaction suggests that the report may have touched on a sensitive topic, possibly revealing information he wished to keep hidden.

Furthermore, it is commendable that NMG did not succumb to these threats and instead confronted the Cabinet Secretary’s uncivil behaviour. NMG’s boldness prompted Kuria to reveal his detestable behaviour, which led to a petition filed by a human rights activist questioning the adherence of Kuria’s conduct to the leadership and integrity chapter of the Constitution.

In instances like these, it is crucial for all media houses to stand together in solidarity and defend any targeted media group against such unwarranted attacks from government officials or any other entities. By singling out NMG, the Cabinet Secretary attempted to divide and weaken the media’s collective voice.

Therefore, it becomes imperative for all media houses to investigate the same story that NMG faced attacks for and provide their own perspective. Moreover, condemning the misconduct of government officials attacking the media is necessary to safeguard press freedom and promote accountability.

In a political landscape where some opposition MPs may be compromised to not play their opposition role, the media becomes the primary pillar which Kenyans rely on to hold the government accountable and expose corruption.

However, it is crucial for NMG to introspect on any claims made by the Cabinet Secretary regarding their journalistic conduct, despite his inappropriate manner of expressing them.  Conducting an internal review to ensure NMG’s practices align with the highest standards will further enhance public confidence and support for the media.

It is also worth mentioning that several media houses have already expressed their support for NMG in the face of these baseless attacks, denouncing Kuria’s irresponsible behaviour. This is commendable.

Overall, NMG deserves applause for their courageous stance in the face of senseless threats from powerful figures and for their efforts to act as the public watchdog to promote accountability.

Media houses must remain united to defend press freedom, transparency, and accountability, fostering a society where such bullying tactics hold no power. By doing so, the media can continue serving as a vital advocate for the people, shedding light on crucial issues and upholding the values of a democratic society.
