Shh, you heard Gachagua promised Kenya Kwanza would hire waganga?

By Lucy Mwangi

  1. A digital card with the logo of Kenyans.co.ke claiming to quote Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua was misleading.  Gachagua is quoted as saying Kenya Kwanza would empower traditional doctors and medicine men to treat patients in areas where clinics are far and hospitals do not exist. A quick search on Gachagua’s social media accounts revealed that no such digital card or statement was ever issued. On June 9 Kenyans.co.ke through their social media platforms labeled the digital card as fake, noting that the post did not originate from their media house.
  2.  A tweet purportedly from NTV claiming that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has revoked Homa Bay gubernatorial aspirant Gladys Wanga’s clearance certificate was fake. A review on Wanga’s and IEBC’s social media accounts yields no information about the revocation. On June 9, NTV identified and flagged the tweet as fake on its official Twitter account, urging the public to disregard the information and to beware of ‘fake news’. IEBC Homa Bay county returning officer Frederick Apopa on June 6, 2022 cleared the Homa Bay Woman Representative ad running mate Oyugi Magwanga to contest for the position.

3. An image shared on Twitter by controversial blogger Madoka Kibet on June 10, 2022 purporting to be the front page of the Daily Nation for June 10 was altered. A keen look at the headline indicates that both the cover photo and the story had been altered; the font used in the headline differs from that of the authentic newspaper. The Media Observer team examined the front page and discovered the lead story and photo had been altered, but the rest of the content is identical to what appears on the genuine publication. On June 10, the authentic front page was shared on Nation Africa’s official Twitter account, with the headline “Block these people, EACC tells Chebukati.”
