Mr Odinga’s strategists are deploying a multi-pronged campaign plan involving leaders across the political divide, including the ruling party Jubilee, in a bid to deal with what they termed as Deputy President William Ruto’s “one man army” (Nation, February 7, p.4). After the handshake, what does “across the political divide” mean?
Next sentence underlines this question: Mr Odinga’s candidature seems to have got a shot in the arm as President Kenyatta, with whom they (he!) reached a political truce in 2018, rallying (rallies!) his troops behind him. So, where does Nation place the “political divide”?
I support the Bill because it merely seeks to put in place a complimentary mechanism for transmission of results where the G3 network fails (Standard, February 7, p.17). Complimentary: expressing a compliment; praising or approving; given free of charge. Complementary: combining in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another. Watch that “i” and “e”.
Speaking to his office in Kabarnet, Ndiwa added that the operation will be severe and meant to restore sanity in Baringo North and South (Standard, February 8, p.5). Wee ofisi, the operation will be severe. That is what “speaking to his office” means.
The woman died on the spot with her body being moved to the Moi Referral Hospital morgue in Voi (Citizen Digital, February 8). Come on! Woman “died on the spot with her body being moved”? Why not simply say “and her body was moved” to the mortuary?
‘I wish Raila was in the country,’ Joho says as Uhuru unveils cancer centre in Mombasa (Citizen Digital headline, February 8). This, surely, deserved a news headline, subordinated to the opening of a cancer centre? What sort of editorial judgement is this?
Otieno had been hospitalised in a Malindi hospital where he died on Saturday morning (Standard, February 9, p.3). The phrase “hospitalised in a Malindi hospital” is tautology (repetition). He was hospitalised in Malindi.
Church not to blame; society is morally and ethically bankrupt (Standard headline, February 9, p.16). Oh really! So, what is this pure “church” that apparently exists outside of corrupt “society”? Doesn’t the church shape – and is shaped by – society, which it’s an integral part of? Absurd.
The annual wildebeest migration from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to Maasai Mara National Reserve in Narok is under threat. Millions of gnus take a suicidal plunge across the Mara River (People Daily, February 10, p.15). Why “suicidal”? The animals don’t die from the annual ritual. For whom is the plunge “suicidal”, the PD reporter or the gnus?
The first phase of the much-awaited mass rapid transport system on Thika Road is set to start in July this year (Standard, February 10, p.8). The buses will charge Sh150 a trip, where matatus often take as little as mbao. Much-awaited, si ndio?
