The Leakeys have been involved in several archaeological inventions that are acclaimed all over the world (Standard, January 7, p.3). Inventions? What’s archaeology? Archaeologists don’t “invent” anything.
Dream team driving Raila’s ‘last bullet’ bid (Standard headline, January 6, p.1). Ill-fitting metaphor. A bullet is fired or shot, not driven.
Raila Odinga, the ODM leader, has previously mounted serious presidential campaigns without meticulous and professional organisation (Star, January 6, p.4). This intro for the lead story is the writer’s opinion, not news. And it is contradictory. How does one mount “serious presidential campaigns without meticulous and professional organisation”? What would be “serious” about poorly organised, chaotic campaigns doomed to fail?
State of urbanisation and small businesses in Mt Kenya region (Standard headline, January 6, p.18). Who would be attracted to read this? What is the news? That is not a newspaper headline but the title of an academic article in The Journal of Eastern Africa Urban Studies.
One of Kenya’s most powerful Attorney Generals, he faced discrimination on the basis of skin colour as a student in South Africa (Standard, January 5, p.16). The plural of attorney general is attorneys general. Why? Because “attorney” is the noun and “general” the adjective.
Proof that music is a powerful force during political campaigns can be traced back to 2002 when Kibaki rode to power with the song ‘Who can bwogo me’ (Standard, January 5, p.9). Tunnel vision. A historical comment written by a millennial? The Standard was founded in 1902 and throughout its existence songs have been used for political campaigns.
Is employment crisis because due to lack of people to hire or no job openings? (Standard, January 3, p.15). What’s “because due to”?
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has divulged about his wife Pauline Musyoka’s medical health (Citizen Digital, January 2). You simply “divulge” something, not “about” (reveal). And what is Pauline’s “medical health”?
Kalonzo says that his wife Pauline Musyoka is recuperating in hospital and her medical state is positively improving. “Improving” is enough. Anyone whose head has cleared of New Year keg would know this is “positive”.
