PEN COP: Brace yourself for news of ‘drumming up support’ in coming months

Nation Breaking News tweet (October 22): Uhuru and Raila drum up support for BBI in Kisumu during an inspection tour of government projects in the county. KBC Channel 1 News tweet: President Kenyatta drums up support for BBI report, urges Kisumu residents to support document. Brace yourself for lots of “drumming up support” in the news.

 The number of Covid-19 patients needing intensive care has been increasing progressively (Standard, October 20, p.3). Why is “progressively” used in this sentence as a qualifier? It means what?

The machete-wielding law enforcement officer, who is reported to have been filled with rage, attacked the lawyer at his home in Wote town, chopping off one of his hands and severing the other (Nation online, October 20). Chop off and sever both mean cut. So, what is this about “chopping off one of his hands and severing the other”?

His humbleness and humility have never changed ever since I knew him (Standard, October 20, p.15). Are these two personal qualities or just one?

Schools will have to wait longer before they can receive the locally assembled desks worth Sh1.9 billion, it has emerged (People Daily, October 20, p.3). Locally assembled? Which other desks do schools use? Foreign assembled?

The tech-savvy village chief of Lanet Umoja is known for using Twitter and other social media platforms to discharge his duties (Nation online, October 21). The story said Francis Kariuki who died last Wednesday was the chief of Lanet Umoja location in Nakuru. Is that the same as “village chief”? “Mr Kariuki led a community of more than 30,000 residents.” Is that a village?

When he reached Kondele, the President was forced to wave atop his vehicle as the crowd cheered wildly (Star online, October 22). President “was forced” to wave? Aje?
