PEN COP: Copy-paste journalism and ‘exelarating’ shows

Only last week October 12th, 11 General Service Unit (GSU) officers 11 police officers patrolling the Kenyan border with Somalia have this evening died after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) (KBC online, October 22). Does one laugh or cry? Copy and paste journalism.

Govt issues alert as floods wreck havoc in 22 counties (My Gov, October 22, p.1). The word is “wreak”, which means cause or create.

A section of Jubilee MPs have said they will reject the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report if it proposes is to create seats for a few individuals (KBC online, October 23). “If it proposes is to create”?

A wilderness with an out-of-this-world flair is Central Island National Park, the home of thousands of birds and crocodiles in the middle of Lake Turkana. Catch this exelerating show on @KTNNewsKE (Chamwada Report tweet, October 24). Normally, the word “flair” means a special ability for doing something well. A wilderness cannot be said to have flair. And what is the meaning of “exelarating”? Exhilarating, perhaps?

Maina said the law would also criminalize hospitals from sharing someone’s health records such as DNA with any State agency (People Daily, October 22, p.2). This is a clumsy construction: “criminalize hospitals from sharing”. The law would make it a crime for hospitals to share etcetera.

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination has officially started amid stringent measures and penalties to curb cheating and leakages (People Daily, October 22, p.5). Officially started? How else might the exam begin? Word has zero communicative value.
