PEN COP: A scribe must not try to sound like PLO

Catholic schools heads vow to fight teen pregnancies (Headline in People Daily, August 1, p.6). Sounds great. This is a huge problem. So, what are the heads of Catholic-run schools going to do? Yesterday, Bishop Paul Kariuki expressed the need for espousal of holistic approach in teaching that is tailor-made to address challenges bedevilling learners. PLO might write/speak like that, but not a journalist. Write simply.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to preside over the 93rd edition of the Kenya Music Festival state gala at Nakuru State House to cap off the fete (People Daily, August 14, p.8). “To cap off” means? It is to cap, which means provide a fitting climax or conclusion.

Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba who were charged with raping a woman have been imprisoned for 15 years each (@KTNKenya tweet, August 16). This is not entirely accurate. The two were not merely charged. They were convicted.

An unknown number of tourists escaped death after their aeroplane crash-landed and killed two wildebeests (Standard online, August 16). Why was the number unknown? This is lazy.
